Harrisburg Jewish Community Center Received Threat Monday

Yesterday, Congressman Lou Barletta (PA-11) joined Congressman Scott Perry (PA-04) in sending a letter to Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly to urge him to investigate the high number of bomb threats made against Jewish Community Centers (JCC’s) in recent months.

“We request the Department to investigate these threats as domestic terrorism and that the Office for Community Partnerships work with the JCC’s to identify targets and provide best practices for deterrence,” both lawmakers wrote.  “JCC’s have been the target of threats for the past several months, and, this past Monday, another wave of cowardly acts was perpetrated.  With 69 threats this year alone, we have to assume these threats are organized and driven by an anti-Semitic ideology.  While no bombs have been found, the perpetrators have successfully instilled fear through terrorist acts and must be brought to justice.”

Barletta and Perry are both members of the House Homeland Security Committee.

“The recent threats of violence against Jewish Community Centers are unfathomable and must be confronted. That is why we’ll be working with both the federal government and our local organizations to ensure the security of our residents and communities,” said Scott Perry.

“I want to thank the members of our local law enforcement community who made sure that the Harrisburg JCC was secure after Monday’s bomb threat,” Barletta said.  “These anti-Semitic threats are inexcusable.  I will continue to work with the department to make sure that all members of our community have the resources necessary to practice their religion peacefully and without fear of a terrorist attack.
