I Won’t Fund Obama’s Illegal Amnesty
On March 3, I voted against legislation to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), including the president’s unlawful executive actions granting amnesty to illegal immigrants. Unfortunately, the House passed this bill, which had already passed the Senate, and on March 4, the president signed it into law. I was especially disappointed in the passage of this bill, as I had coauthored the lead amendment to stop the president’s executive amnesty in the version the House passed in January. Unfortunately, the Senate stripped my language from this bill before sending it back to the House for a final vote.
Let us remember that it was the president himself who said at least 22 times that he did not have the authority to unilaterally grant amnesty to illegal immigrants. Despite our best efforts in the House, we simply were not able to break the logjam of Democrats in the Senate who insisted on funding the president’s illegal actions as a prerequisite to an agreement on DHS appropriations.
