President Suspends Refugee Program, Focuses on Syria & Six Other Countries

WASHINGTON – Congressman Lou Barletta (PA-11) today applauded President Trump’s executive order suspending the flawed U.S. Refugee Admissions Program and focusing specifically on Syria and six other countries known to be hotbeds of terrorism.  The countries specifically affected are Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.  In the meantime, the president ordered a review of the screening, or vetting, process until it can be determined that refugee applicants are indeed the individuals they claim to be.

Barletta issued the following statement:

“We are a compassionate nation, one built on legal and orderly immigration, and one which has always offered a place for people seeking better lives.  Unfortunately, our enemies know this about us and are seeking to use our generosity against us.  We know that ISIS has expressed their intent to use our refugee program to sneak their fighters and sympathizers into our country because they know our security measures are lacking.  We cannot allow this.

“I commend President Trump for suspending the refugee program, and in particular for Syria and the six other countries, because they are unquestionably terrorist havens and hotspots.  In hearings before my House Homeland Security Committee, we have had numerous national security experts tell us that we simply cannot accurately screen refugees because we have no information from their home countries to verify their identities.  In many cases, we simply have no idea who we are admitting to the country.  I am in full support of President Trump’s actions, which I believe are only prudent, while we work on a system that allows us to verify the identity and background of applicants.”
