Barletta Helps Secure Federal Grant for Hazleton Fire Department
WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Lou Barletta (PA-11) announced the Hazleton Fire Department will receive $360,612 through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant Program. Barletta has continuously advocated for the Hazleton Fire Department to receive this much-needed funding, having sent multiple requests on behalf of the department since 2014.
“To say that Congressman Barletta has been a tremendous help in obtaining this grant would be an understatement,” said Donald Leshko, the Chief of the Hazleton Fire Department. “This funding will help us provide enhanced emergency services to Hazleton and ensure safer operations for our firefighters while they work to keep our community safe. I am very grateful for Congressman Barletta’s support, which he has given me and the Hazleton Fire Department since his first day as mayor. His commitment to the safety of our community and our emergency responders is unmatched.”
“As the former mayor and life-long resident of Hazleton, I know firsthand how much our brave firefighters risk each and every day to keep our communities safe,” Barletta said. “Having personally worked with Chief Leshko to obtain this funding, I am pleased that the department has finally been provided the resources it needs to protect our community. I am proud to support funding for the Hazleton Fire Department and fire departments throughout the 11th District, and will continue to ensure they have the personnel, equipment, and training needed to do their jobs as safely as possible.”
The SAFER Grant Program distributes funds to assist fire departments and volunteer interest organizations with increasing or maintaining the number of trained front line firefighters and emergency services personnel available in their communities. The program seeks to assist local fire departments with deployment capabilities in order to respond to emergencies, ensuring communities have adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards. The grants are available to volunteer, professional, or combination fire departments.
