Barletta Statement on Obama Failure to Veto Anti-Israel U.N. Resolution

Press Release

WASHINGTON – Congressman Lou Barletta (PA-11) today issued a statement regarding the failure of the United States to veto an anti-Israel resolution before the United Nations Security Council. The resolution, which the United States abstained from voting on or vetoing, was approved by the Security Council..  It has been the previous practice of the United States to stand allied with Israel at the United Nations.

Barletta issued the following statement:

“This is a particularly shameful move by President Obama – especially with only a month left in his administration – to turn his back on Israel. It is the long-standing practice of the United States to side with our only democratic ally in the Middle East, but Obama has broken with that tradition. The resolution he declined to veto serves only to isolate Israel from its neighbors, and the inaction by the Obama administration sends the clear message that America cannot be counted on as a faithful ally.  Even worse, it is easy to perceive this as a parting shot at Israel by Obama, considering that the U.S. vetoed and voted against similar resolutions in 2011 and 2014. Today's inaction is a severe blow to the peace process.  There is help on the way, however. I am confident that shortly, under President Trump, there will no longer be any confusion around the world, and the United States will once again firmly stand with our allies, the Israelis.”
