WASHINGTON – Representative Lou Barletta released the following statement regarding his support of H.R. 662, which extends funding for surface infrastructure through September 30, 2011.

“Supporting our infrastructure benefits our economy, our safety and our jobs,” Barletta said. “Today’s vote will allow our states and communities to continue making critical improvements to our infrastructure at a time when 69% of major roadways have been listed as poor or mediocre in Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties alone.

“With a staggering 22.5% unemployment rate in the construction sector, we simply cannot afford to let this critical revenue source expire when it can be prevented.”

“As a member of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, I look forward to working with my colleagues to pass long-term legislation that will meet our future transportation needs.  This extension gives Congress both the time and ability to produce a smart, fiscally responsible bill.”

According to a study conducted by the non-profit organization TRIP, 69% of major roads in Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties were rated as poor or mediocre.
