Rep. Barletta announces federal buyouts for Plymouth Township
HAZLETON – U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta, PA-11, announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved the buyouts of seven residential properties in Plymouth Township.
Two of the properties are on Coal Street – an area that was flooding during severe downpours over the July 4 holiday weekend.
The seven residential properties will be purchased and demolished by the federal government, and the land will be restored to open space.
The total project cost is $767,400; the federal share is $575,550.
“These buyouts are good news for Plymouth Township residents who have been seeking this news for a very long time. I’m pleased and proud to tell these families that they will no longer have to suffer through repeated flooding and the process of rebuilding their lives,” Rep. Barletta said. “I hope these families will be able to live without worrying about flooding ever again, and I wish them well.”
The five other properties bought out are in the West Nanticoke section of Plymouth Township – Four are on Poplar Street and one is on Canal Street.
Buyouts are funded through FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.
