WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Lou Barletta, PA-11, released the following statement this afternoon in response to President Obama's immigration announcement:

“There is no question that our immigration system is broken and needs to be repaired.  But, the truth is, the president’s immigration plan is nothing new. Similar to the Senate plan unveiled yesterday, it does not address the underlying causes of illegal immigration in our country.

“This is a problem many, many decades in the making, and while many believe the solution won't be found overnight, I believe we already have a legal process in place that addresses these exact issues. We need to enforce our current laws. President Obama promised a remedy nearly five years ago and has only just touched the issue for the first time.

“The president believes our nation’s borders are secure. I couldn’t disagree more. The president’s plan to push for a clear pathway to citizenship, without meaningful border security first, will only make the problem worse. The proposed pathway to citizenship will undoubtedly encourage millions more to flock to our country illegally, consequently taking advantage of the benefits that American citizenship has to offer. This is the 1986 amnesty all over again.  The American people deserve better.”
