Rep. Lou Barletta comments on the passing of former Senator Specter
HAZLETON – U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta (PA-11) released the following statement upon hearing of the passing of former U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter:
Today, all Pennsylvanians – regardless of their political leanings – should mourn the passing of former Senator Arlen Specter. Senator Specter was definitely a passionate voice on national issues, but he was also tireless advocate for Northeastern Pennsylvania. When I was mayor of Hazleton, I worked closely with Senator Specter on economic development projects, and he always brought a voice of reason and experience to our discussions. I was also fortunate enough to testify before Senator Specter and the late Senator Ted Kennedy during a field hearing about illegal immigration in Philadelphia. At the time, offering testimony before those two giants of the Senate was daunting, but it was an experience I will never forget.
Whether it was in the Senate over his beliefs and his priorities, during his hard-fought elections, or against the relentless monster that is cancer, Arlen was a fighter, and that is how I will best remember him.
On behalf of me and my family, I would like to extend our most sincere condolences to Senator Specter's family and friends.
